Lumino

Smart Home Energy Management Platform

Lumino is a smart home energy monitoring and management platform designed to help households gain complete visibility into their energy consumption.

In many developing markets, households rely on a combination of grid electricity, generators, inverters, solar systems, and battery storage to maintain consistent power. Despite this complexity, there are limited consumer-focused tools that provide a unified view of energy usage, costs, and power availability.

Lumino was conceived to bridge this gap by creating a centralized platform where users can monitor every connected energy source and appliance in real time. The goal was to make energy consumption visible, predictable, and actionable while empowering homeowners to make better energy decisions.

Problem

Households managing multiple power sources often lack visibility into how energy is consumed, what appliances contribute most to usage, and how much power costs over time. This leads to inefficient energy consumption, unexpected outages, and increased spending.

Objectives

• Create a unified energy management experience across multiple power sources.
• Enable real-time monitoring of household energy consumption.
• Simplify energy tracking for non-technical users.
• Provide remote control capabilities for connected appliances.
• Improve energy awareness through clear analytics and insights.

Design Approach

To better understand user behavior and energy management challenges, I conducted user interviews and research with homeowners managing multiple power systems. I also analyzed existing energy monitoring solutions to identify usability gaps and opportunities for differentiation.

Key Solutions

• Unified dashboard for monitoring all energy sources in one place.
• Appliance-level energy tracking and consumption insights.
• Remote control functionality for connected household devices.
• Real-time monitoring of energy usage and associated costs.
• Energy analytics designed to help users identify waste and optimize consumption.
• Integrated power unit purchasing and management experience.

Challenges

One of the primary challenges was translating highly technical concepts from the energy and electrical engineering space into a user experience that felt intuitive for everyday homeowners. Balancing technical accuracy with simplicity required extensive research, information architecture exploration, and iterative design decisions.

Outcome

The result was a comprehensive smart energy management platform that successfully transformed a complex energy ecosystem into a streamlined digital experience. Usability testing indicated strong user comprehension, intuitive navigation, and increased confidence in managing household energy consumption.
